Welcome

The idea behind this blog came early on in the pandemic, as perhaps many such creative thoughts did, springing freely onto the unfettered newness of an uncertain time. Though, one also might pause at the idea of starting a blog during a pandemic and other global and local events of upheaval. Too trivial? Too obvious an attempt at distraction? Aren’t there more serious matters demanding one’s attention?

Yet, it was a remark from an online sermon that crystallized the notion behind The Intentional Ordinary; the idea that “social distancing” was not really that, but rather, physical distancing promoting social solidarity. Even if the fullness of connection remains beyond the realm of internet interaction, the pandemic highlighted the value of distanced solidarity, a quality that ought to be at the heart of all online interaction. In being communicated, in being received by another, content finds a level of wholeness in its identity.

This outward sense of wholeness and community mirrors a desire in our innermost depths for fulfillment, a motion toward something more. This journey always beckons. Even in the tedious grind of daily work, the uniquely human capacity to know and reflect longs to be nurtured. Yet, so often it’s put off. Perhaps later. After the new year. After the new job. After the pandemic.

But truthfully, such a journey is not conditional. There are no exterior requirements. The intentional life, the pursuit of what is truly best and the search for authentic joy, constantly waits for us in the cracks and crannies of ordinary life. It is little more than pondering why and letting this wonder flow into life. As such, it’s a journey we can all tap into. A pause to relish joy, consideration given to a simple detail, or thoughtful wonder at our world are all more than merely actions that one does—they are an extension of who we are. Every act of intentionality is a declaration against the idea that life is arbitrary.

And so, spurred by a spirit of solidarity, this is the goal The Intentional Ordinary wishes to share and pursue: that our normal routine be fully touched by the gift of intentionality and the inherent adventure that it brings to the rubric of life.
